Academic Knowledge Is Being Registered: 2025 Patent Achievements from Our University

Our university achieved significant success in 2025 through the patent, international patent, and utility model applications it made, in line with its goals of commercializing knowledge production, developing innovative technologies, and providing social benefit. Inventions developed by faculty members and students from different academic units, especially the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, attracted attention across a wide range from the defense industry to healthcare, from artificial intelligence to energy, and from construction to environmental technologies.

 

OUR ACADEMICS AND STUDENT WHO FILED PATENT APPLICATIONS IN 2025

 

Prof. Dr. Ömer Sinan Şahin, a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, stood out with numerous inventions he developed for production technologies and industrial systems. Prof. Dr. Şahin filed patent applications titled Integrated Line and Cutting System with Pixel Counting-Based Image Processing Techniques in Cutting and Packaging Machines, Grinding Cylinder Surface Cleaning and Roughening System, Increasing Cutting Quality with a Spring-Damper System in Articulated Saws, and Main Boom Support and Buckling Prevention System in Folding Boom and Fully Folding Cranes.

 

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Serdar Karakaş, a faculty member in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, filed a patent application for his invention titled A New Additive Hybrid Laminated Composite Armor System for Military Ground Vehicles, which he developed for the defense industry.

 

From the same department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kocabaş contributed to surface coating technologies with his work titled A Three-Component Coating System for Electroless Nickel-Boron Coating.

 

Prof. Dr. Murat Ceylan and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mücahit Cihan, faculty members of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, filed a patent application in the field of health technologies with the invention titled Determination of Meaningful Spectrum by Hyperspectral Imaging for Sepsis Diagnosis in Newborns and Its Evaluation with a Customized Artificial Intelligence Model. From the same department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mücahid Barstuğan also filed an application with System and Method for Detecting Persons Not Wearing Overshoes in the Environment by an Artificial Intelligence-Based Image Processing Method.

 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Yılmaz from the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning of the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences drew attention with his invention titled Artificial Intelligence-Supported Automatic Strabismus Detection System.

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Hasan Dursun contributed to health and rehabilitation technologies with Portable Walking Support Device Stimulating Natural Walking for Individuals Experiencing Walking Difficulties.

 

Res. Asst. Dr. Emre Karakaya, a faculty member in the Department of Mining Engineering, filed a patent application for mining and material testing technologies with his invention titled Integrated Analyzer Measuring Drilling Speed and Energy Consumption in Laboratory-Type Drillers and Cutters.

 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülnihal Kara, a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Engineering, and Prof. Dr. İlkay Özaytekin, a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering, stood out with their environmentally friendly technology titled Nanofiber Membrane-Supported Module Enabling the Selective Separation of H₂S from Mixed Gas Flow.

 

Prof. Dr. Salih Aydoğan, a faculty member in the Department of Mining Engineering, developed an important invention for industry with his work titled Protective Atmosphere Resistance Furnace Design for Strategic Materials That Can Be Produced at High Temperatures.

 

Prof. Dr. Ülkü Sultan Keskin, a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering, and Lecturer Özge Zor Avcan from the Vocational School of Technical Sciences filed a patent application titled Foam Concrete Reinforced with Square-Holed Mesh Reinforcement Produced from PETG Material and Its Production Method.

 

From the Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kamanlı, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Altuğ Ünal, Res. Asst. Abdülkadir Solak, and Lecturer Salih Cengiz from the Vocational School of Technical Sciences contributed to the experimental infrastructure with their work titled Axial Load–Bending–Torsion Test Setup.

 

Ömer Uludağ, a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, filed an important patent application at the student level with his invention titled Debris Search and Preliminary Exploration Robot with Chemical Detector.

 

INTERNATIONAL PATENT APPLICATIONS IN 2025

 

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Serdar Karakaş, a faculty member in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, filed an international patent application for his invention titled A New Additive Hybrid Laminated Composite Armor System for Military Ground Vehicles.

 

Asst. Prof. Dr. Kemal Erdoğan and Asst. Prof. Dr. Halil Çimen, faculty members of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, filed an international patent application with their invention titled Extending Battery Life by Adaptively Managing Charge-Discharge Depth in Electric Vehicles.

 

INVENTIONS RECEIVING PATENT AND UTILITY MODEL REGISTRATION

 

In 2025, many inventions developed within our university were entitled to receive patent and utility model registration certificates. In this context, the Mill Roller Grinding Cylinder Damper System belonging to Prof. Dr. Ömer Sinan Şahin and Res. Asst. Taner Coşkun was registered. In addition, many of Prof. Dr. Şahin’s inventions related to production and process technologies also received registration certificates.

 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Bilgehan Makineci, a faculty member in the Department of Geomatics Engineering, achieved registration success with Inter-Vehicle Communication System via QR Code; and from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mücahid Barstuğan and Asst. Prof. Dr. Kemal Erdoğan achieved registration success with Safe Student Calling System from the Classroom in Schools. The work titled Emergency Brake Warning System to Ensure the Safety of the Vehicle Behind, belonging to Asst. Prof. Dr. Kemal Erdoğan, also received registration.

 

From the Department of Civil Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gamze Doğan’s Method for Detecting Structural and Non-Structural Damage in Reinforced Concrete Structures by Deep Learning was also among the inventions that received registration.

The patent, international patent, and registration studies carried out by our academics and students in 2025 are a concrete indicator of our university’s research, development, and innovation capacity. These inventions, developed across a wide area from the defense industry to healthcare, and from artificial intelligence to energy and environmental technologies, reveal our university’s qualified scientific output and the strong collaborations it has established with industry. I sincerely congratulate all our academics and students who contributed to this important success, and I wish that their work will continue to contribute to the scientific and technological development of our country.”

 

While our university continues to contribute to the R&D, innovation, and entrepreneurship ecosystem through these works that transform academic knowledge into innovative products, it also continues to increase the added value produced by its faculty members and students at national and international levels.
